Softball Girls take Another year by Storm.
Madison Griffey
Here at Spanish Springs High School, we have always been known for how great our sports teams are. For girls, our softball team has always been outstanding. This season so far, they have an overall record of 17-4 and a league record of 3-2. The team consists of thirteen girls and four coaches. These coaches have coached many seasons, and each one has been a great mentor for our Lady Cougars. The seniors on the team have been playing for Spanish Springs since their freshman year and have contributed greatly to the lady's success. These seniors are, Alleighfaye Abbie, Brooke Baxter, Natalie Hagerty, Layni Noonkester, and Mckenna Timmons. The girls still have more games to go, and this is just the middle of the season. These girls take a lot of time to practice and get better for each any every game they’re faced with. Some girls even have plans to play after high school as well. One girl being Alleighfaye Abbie. Being on a team is where teamwork and friendships are made, and this softball team of 2024 has it all. We’re excited to see where they take the rest of the season.
SSHS Battle of the Bands
Anjolynna Ball
Did you know that Spanish Springs High School hosts an annual competition known as “Battle of the Bands”? This competition took place this year on March 15th, 2024, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. A lot of bands showed up to compete and they all did amazing as each band had their own unique song choices and playing styles. This event allows students from any school to compete for the prize, and this year we saw students from as far as Reno High School! There was a total of seven bands who competed that night and each one played very impressively. Not only do students get to play, but every year our very own Mr. Carpenter plays an array of songs with his band and never disappoints. This year Mr. Carpenter even played an original song that he wrote all by himself! The theater was packed with people from not only SSHS but other schools and even some parents showed up. The winner of this competition was announced to be a returning band named Luminescence, and their prize for winning was getting to headline at the Holland Projects “Young-Blood” event on April 26th. A student who attended the event said, “The bands were surprisingly good, especially for this being a school event!” And a member of one of the bands that competed stated, “Even though we didn't win, I still had a blast!”
Say NO to Drugs
Madison Griffey
Drugs have brought down so many people's lives and ended so many more. Teenagers have been able to get a hold of drugs with almost no effort. What is being done to stop this? Drugs have affected so many kids' and even adults' brains. Studies have shown that when you use marijuana, it affects your attention, memory, and ability to learn. The effects of it can last for days or even weeks. Students tend to get lower grades and fall behind when using drugs. They are more likely to drop out of school as well. “A drug recall is the most effective way to protect the public from a defective or potentially harmful product. A recall is a voluntary action taken by a company to remove a defective drug product from the market or warn patients and consumers about a potential risk.” Adults tend to have many struggles in their life when dealing with drugs as well. Adults use it as a coping mechanism for any personal problems they may have. Anyone can become addicted after one use. Many adults go into life with a plan and drugs have brought these plans to an end. Adults seem to struggle with drugs more than teens do because they tend to deal with more problems. Over time adults will end up losing jobs and money all because of one drug they didn’t say no to. Drugs have ruined so many people's lives no matter how old or what their life situation is. Drugs create medical problems and can give those who use drugs bad mental illnesses. Don’t let it ruin you.

The Tortured Women’s Department
Xiana Andersen
On February 4th, 2024, Taylor swift announced her 11th studio album titled The Tortured Poets Department after winning her 13th Grammy at the annual Grammy awards show. Although many fans around the world were ecstatic for the new album, it received lots of hate. Many male artists are saying that she should not have used the Grammys to announce her new album, making the awards show “all about her”. Although this situation is not unusual, the young female artist has encountered many problems in her career; all due to men.
In 2009, Taylor Swift was receiving her first MTV award for the “You Belong with Me” music video when Kanye West joined her on the stage. He took the microphone from her and told the crowd that he would let Taylor finish, but that Beyonce had one of the best music videos of all time. Why did he do this? Simply because he was a man that wanted to bring down another women’s success. This interaction led to many disputes that are still going on today. In Kanye’s song titled, “Famous” released in 2016 he said,” I feel like me and Taylor might still have s*x. Why? I made that b**** famous.” In the music video he put her, along with many other women, naked in bed with him. This started the controversy of a lifetime. Taylor Swift never gave him permission to use her name or her body in his song or music video. However, he is a man in the music industry, and she was just a woman. Taylor has addressed the problem of men being seen as more than women. One of the most important is her song titled, “The Man” released on the album titled Lover in 2019. It says, “What’s it like to brag about raking in dollars and getting b****** and models, and it's all good if you’re bad and its okay if you’re mad. If I was out flashing my dollars, I’d be a b**** not a baller, they paint me out to be bad, so it’s okay if I’m mad. I’m so sick of running as fast as I can, wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man. And I’m so sick of them coming at me again, cause if I was a man, then I’d be the man.” The 34-year-old singer is dating football star Travis Kelce. She has received hate for the last few months because the NFL has shown her onscreen at his games. This is something she has no control over. But because she is a woman no matter what she does she will receive hate for it. If she does not attend his games, then she is a bad girlfriend. If she does attend, then she is doing it for attention. Taylor Swift and other female artists are great examples of how the world is unfair to women even the ones that are idolized.
